The intent of this change is to allow colleges to experiment with alternative student preparation for the standard transfer-level statistics course, and to determine if changes can increase student success in their local environment. Both the CSU system and the UC system have made recent changes in their requirements in this area, in part in response to a vigorous local, statewide, and national discussion of the issues particularly the effects of the algebra pipeline on student completion of a transfer level math course. Some analysis can be found in the  HYPERLINK "http://www.edpolicyinca.org/publications/degrees-freedom-probing-math-placement-policies-california-colleges-and-universities-report-3-3-part-series" Degrees of Freedom series from Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE) and in the documentation of various Carnegie Foundation projects and courses. The Math Faculty Discipline Review Group (FDRG) for the C-ID project is well aware that there is a wide range of opinions within our departments and our systems. The new language reflects input from individual math faculty, system math groups and academic senates (local and statewide) and attempts to find a reasonable compromise while encouraging the development of increased options for students. The actual C-ID language states: Required Prerequisites: 1) Intermediate algebra or 2) any CSU accepted* statistics pathway curriculum prerequisite *At present there are two mechanisms to become accepted: the proposed statistics course has been accepted to meet CSU General Education Breadth Area B4 the pathway has been accepted by the CSU Chancellor's Office process per its October 20, 2015  HYPERLINK "http://www.calstate.edu/app/geac/documents/statistics-pathways-in-csu-quantitative-reasoning-fall2015.pdf" memo (Statistics Pathways in CSU Quantitative Reasoning) The first option retains the traditional intermediate algebra course as a prerequisite and departments are free to maintain such course outlines. The second option acknowledges a four-year experiment in the CSU system (exception period expires the beginning of Fall 2019 term) - which allows for certain integrated pathways/sequences to complete statistics. Such courses then satisfy the C-ID prerequisite requirement. (Notice that the CSU memo referenced specifically states, in part: Students who complete approved statistics pathways curriculum during the exception period will be deemed by the CSU to have met the quantitative reasoning requirement in the Golden Four requirements for transfer admission. They will also have satisfied Area B4 Quantitative Reasoning of the CSU GE Breadth transfer curriculum.) Departments are encouraged to take advantage of this limited opportunity to create and evaluate alternative statistics pathways that still preserve the traditional GE transfer function of this course. The revised MATH 110 descriptor is available on the C-ID website:  HYPERLINK "https://c-id.net/view_final.html" https://c-id.net/view_final.html PROCESS In looking to revise the existing C-ID MATH 110 descriptor, the Math FDRG followed the existing C-ID HYPERLINK "https://c-id.net/docs/Descriptor Review Process - Updated 2-25-15.pdf"policy on how to propose a substantive change outside of the 5-year review to a finalized document (such as a TMC or descriptor). Assessing the impact of colleges using an alternative student preparation for a statistics course, the Math FDRG proposed to the Intersegmental Curriculum Workgroup (ICW), comprised of both CSU and CCC representatives, the proposed change to the C-ID MATH 110 descriptor to address the alternative preparation. The revised C-ID MATH 110 descriptor was vetted statewide three times: February 1 March 2, 2016; April 4 May 6, 2016; and August 1 September 16, 2016. Faculty at colleges and universities, and Articulation Officers were contacted via the C-ID Listervs and the CIAC listserv to solicit feedback on the proposed changes. All of the vetting results were reviewed by the FDRG this group is comprised of three CSU faculty and three CCC faculty. Prior to finalizing the revision to the descriptor, all FDRGs that use the MATH 110 descriptor in their TMC were contacted and asked to provide input on the change. --continued Course Identification Numbering System (C-ID) Alternative Fuels and Advanced Transportation Technology The Alternative Fuels and Advanced Transportation Technology FDRG recently completed and finalized a descriptor for the discipline. It is now available on the C-ID website for colleges to submit courses. The X designation on the descriptors is intended to designate that the faculty discipline review group (FDRG) that drafted and finalized the descriptor(s) were comprised only of faculty from the community college system. Courses that are submitted for the descriptors do not have to be transferable, as the courses are not included in an existing transfer model curriculum (TMC) that carries the SB 1440 benefits. If the CSU system decides in the future that they are willing to accept the descriptors as comparable to their courses, then the FDRG will have to be reformed to include CSU faculty and a reassessment of the descriptors will take place. Colleges with a transferable course that have submitted courses for the X descriptors will have to decide if they will accept an equivalent non-transferable course from a college that has also gained the C-ID designation.
